Since moving into its new community centre building last year, Starcross Pre-school in Devon is consolidating its role as a community hub. The spacious new premises provides an after school, holiday club, pre-school and baby and toddler group, and has space which can be used by local families and the primary school to which it is attached.

"The new building is having a huge impact on the school by extending its services and its links with the community," says Primary head teacher Iannis Ireland. "We had championed the cause for a new facility for a very long time and it is now taking us closer to our aim of offering more elements of service and providing added value."

The staffing team are delighted that after so many years in temporary accommodation they can now spread out in an environment, which allows them to do justice to the six areas of learning under the EYFS.

"We were formerly in Portakabins and had very little in the way of facilities," the Manager says. "We did a lot of fund-raising and last year gained funding from Devon County Council to put up a brand new building. We are thrilled to be in a building that gives us everything we need - not least of which are children"s toilets and sinks, including disabled facilities."

A decking area extending to the school playground has enabled Starcross to provide more free-flow outdoors and encourages interaction between the younger and older primary children.

"We have plans to further extend the outdoor area," says the Manager. "We will be putting up a coloured fence which will enclose a quiet area and also an area of road markings and number lines. The fence can be moved to make the area flexible".

Numbers of children attending the pre-school have increased in the last year and it currently has 42 children on roll. The original stone primary school building dates back to 1839 and has been added to with new buildings in 1996. The school has a swimming pool, a large hall, fitness trail and a Millennium garden. Teachers in reception work closely with the pre-school to ensure that planning and transitions between the two settings run smoothly.

Bringing the new community building to fruition has taken a joint effort between the committees and staff involved in running the pre-school, holiday and after school clubs.

The pre-school administrator says, "Everyone joined forces to make it happen and one year on we are delighted to be settling in and getting the setting properly resourced. Having modern facilities and a spacious environment has been a huge morale boost for staff, and children and families are loving it."
